How to Care for Cotton, Silk & Khadi Kurtas

A well-made kurta can last for years — but only if it is cared for properly. Cotton, silk, and khadi each have their own needs. Here is how to keep your ethnic wear looking as good as the day you bought it.

Caring for Cotton & Cambric Kurtas

Cotton is forgiving, but a few habits go a long way. Wash in cold water, ideally by hand or on a gentle machine cycle. Turn the garment inside out to protect the surface. Avoid harsh detergents and never wring silk-blend cottons. Dry in shade — direct sun fades colour over time. A warm iron while the fabric is still slightly damp gives the crispest finish.

Caring for Silk & Tussar Silk

Silk deserves extra gentleness. We strongly recommend dry cleaning for silk and Tussar silk kurtas, especially after festive wear. If you must spot-clean at home, use a soft damp cloth and never rub. Store silk away from direct light, and use a breathable cloth garment bag rather than plastic, which traps moisture.

Caring for Khadi

Khadi softens beautifully with age. Hand wash the first few times to let the fabric settle. Expect slight shrinkage initially — this is natural. Iron on medium heat and embrace the gentle texture; that handwoven character is the point.

General Storage Tips

  • Always store garments clean — stains set over time.
  • Fold heavy silk kurtas rather than hanging them, to avoid stretching at the shoulders.
  • Keep a few cloves or natural moth repellents in your wardrobe.
  • Air out festive wear after each use before storing.
